DVD Review: ‘Best of Warner Bros. 20 Film Collection: Thrillers’

CHICAGO– Warner Brothers expanded their DVD box set offerings for their anniversary year to five (following Pictures, Musicals, Romance, and Comedies) with the release of “Best of Warner Bros. 20 Film Collection: Thrillers,” a collection of twenty good-to-great films, including some of the company’s most beloved. If you don’t own a large number of these, it’s a great way to go, especially since most outlets price them to a degree where it works out to less than $5 a film.

Warner Bros. wisely knows that they’re one of the few studios who could pull off a series of releases like these best-of sets and not make them feel repetitive or loaded with filler. This one is a bit weighted to more current films (70% have come out in my lifetime and almost half of the box had their theatrical release in the ’90s) and I’m sure some fans of classic thrillers will feel slighted but it makes it arguably the trendiest and most young-skewing set you could get a loved one this holiday season. Put it on your shopping list.

What are the highlights? “The Maltese Falcon,” “Strangers on a Train,” “North by Northwest,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” “Goodfellas,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “L.A. Confidential,” and “The Dark Knight” are must-own films for movie lovers of any generation. And that’s not meant as any sort of slight on other great flicks in here like “Seven,” “Heat,” and “Inception.” There are very few, if any missteps in here. In fact, I’d give a “thumbs up” to them all. How many other 20 film collections could you possibly say that about? Possibly none.

All 20 films come with the same DVD transfer quality and special features as in their own stand-alone releases. You consider these collections of already-released DVDS, so check out the individual movie pages for bonus material info, some of which is plentiful.
